What Generation Are You? | What Am I?

  • My sister and I were both born in California.
  • Both my parents were born in the California.
  • Of my grandparents, two were born in Hawaii, one in California, and one in Utah (that's a funny one, people always look at me sideways when I tell them my 92 year old grandma grew up on a farm!).
  • My great-grandparents: Most were born in Japan, but on my mom's side, a couple were born in Canada.
So what does that make me? 4th/5th Generation? Generation 4.5?
At 25, I'm still not too sure!

  2. My parents were both born in Maryland. My dad's parents were born in Germany, but met here in the U.S. My mom's family tree has been in the US forever. One of my cousins traced the families back to the Revolutionary War. They're mostly Irish, with some English.

I'm only 50% German, but at the same time all American. :)

  3. PS - I think if all of your great grandparents were born outside the U.S. and all of your grandparents were born inside the U.S., then the grandparent's were all first generation and patents are second generation???

    2. I guess I never thought of it as what generation I am in America, but more as how many generations removed I am from Japan. Over the years I've sort of disassociated myself (sad to think of it this way), but I've noticed I've put an emphasis on how distant I am from Japan. Not out of shame or anything, but because it explains why no one in my family speaks the language, or why I have no family in Japan.

And I also counted the first person to leave Japan as gen 1, instead of the first person born away from Japan, if that makes sense. Lol, so confusing.
